CONCEPT

A new way of looking at architecture. Through new building technologies, things previously thought impossible are now within our reach. Shifted house pushes the boundaries of what is possible, shifting perspectives by shifting architecture. The design feels as if in motion: a quick shift, pulling two volumes away from each other, but stopped by the landscape. The dynamic, futuristic lines are emphasized by linear lights. The entire building is finished with white stucco, a blank material attracting little attention, leaving all for the unique architecture.

With a three-car garage, four luxurious bedrooms and an indoor-outdoor swimming pool, the basement is filled with luxurious living. Because the house is built on a hill, the basement has a unique view of the lake. In the pool, the lake can be seen from eye level. The kitchen and royal living room are located on the ground floor, four meters above the lake. Perspective of the lake shifts when living in this house: walking upstairs gives an entirely different view. This is emphasised by the direction each volume is facing; the basement looks one way, the ground floor the other.

Pure geometric forms

SHIFTED FORMS

“This futuristic luxury concrete villa owes its scenography to the shifted forms that respond to nature”. Because the two main volumes move away from each other, a central plateau is created, which is equipped with a spacious seating area and a skylight that connects to the indoor pool.

A bold statement and an awesome place to live.
“Architecture has its place in the concrete world. This is where it exists. This is where it makes its statement. ”'' PETER ZUMTHOR''

GROUND FLOOR

The ground floor has an open floor plan layout. The space gets divided by a structural element, which houses the kitchen amenities, and by an indoor patio. The structural element creates a visual divide between the kitchen and living room, defining each space.

BASEMENT LEVEL

The indoor patio is a physical obstruction but allows visual sightlines still. It creates a blurred line between inside and outside, bringing in plenty of natural daylight. Shifted House is defined by its context, especially the landscape. With the patio, Shifted House literally brings the context inside the design. Creating a balanced harmony.

INTEGRATING ARCHITECTURE
AND LANDSCAPING

FOLLOWING THE CONTOURS
OF THE LAND

The transparent nature of Shifted house may seem to oppose privacy, but because the two side facades are completely closed and the glass facades are set back, all intruding sightlines are obstructed. Only private views of the backyard and the lake are made.

The interior of Shifted House takes a modern approach to creating spaces. Using hybrid spaces, the uniformity of a standard floorplan is broken and a unique layout is made. The basement has two such hybrid spaces. The garage, which functions as a hallway as well, opens up the design, letting the residents view their favourite cars each time they move from one space to another. The pool opens up entirely with large minimal sliding glass doors, fading the boundary between inside and outside. This is emphasised by the indoor-outdoor pool.

4 STEPS OF DESIGN

The design originated from two main volumes placed on top of each other, with the floor folding around the second floor. These elements are cut loose for a spectacular effect.  The second volume “floats” over this roof by means of a construction clad with mirrors. This reflects the wooded surroundings.
